M’sian crowned as Miss Transsexual Australia 2017
A Malaysian has been crowned as Miss Transsexual Australia 2017 at the award ceremony held in Melbourne last night.
Transgender activist Nisha Ayub posted a congratulatory message on her Facebook for Laeticia Ravenna (right in photo).
“Congratulations to our very own Malaysian Transsexual rep (representative) for your victory as Miss Transsexual Australia.
“You deserved to be the queen,” said Nisha, who shared Laeticia’s photo taken moments after she was crowned, standing alongside the winner of Miss Gay Australia.
In her post, Nisha also credited the organisers for separating the gays and transsexuals as recognition of the differences and diversity surrounding gender identity.
“Congrats again to you dear Laeticia. You made the community proud,” she added.
In her profile shared on the pageant’s Facebook page last November, Laeticia said her proposed advocacy project would be named ‘Rising Star’ - targeted towards younger transwomen who made be looking for a role model.
“As a young transitioner, I always find it hard to get help and support from the older generation.
“Most young transwomen left home at an early age and lack good guidance to leave a fulfilling life,” Laeticia said, adding that she wished to share her experiences with the younger generation.
Among others, Laeticia said she first graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Theatre and Dance, which led to her career as a music teacher and performing part-time as a cabaret performer in Thailand.
She then left to pursue her passion in culinary arts, enrolling into Le Cordon Paris in Bangkok.
The Federal Territories Islamic Department (Jawi) had in April last year courted international headlines when it raided a private dinner by transwomen who hosted a so-called beauty contest and arrested the event’s organiser.
It was reported at the time that the alleged basis for the raid was a two-month-old tip-off to Jawi that there would be a beauty pageant at the event, in violation of a 1996 fatwa forbidding Muslim women to participate in beauty contests.
