NAJIB DENIES NORTH KOREAN LINKS TO KL BANKS –malaysian insider

Najib Razak said today that Malaysia does not engage in illegal weapons trade, amid reports of the existence of suspicious North Korean bank accounts here.

A South Korean newspaper had alleged that North Korea was using Malaysian bank accounts to facilitate illicit arms deals.

“We don’t indulge in illicit arms trade,” Najib told reporters when asked to comment on the news report.

A Reuters story quoting the Joogang Ilbo and other South Korean newspapers said that the Obama administration has uncovered suspicious North Korean bank accounts in Malaysia and US officials are possibly trying to shut it down for allegedly being used for illegal arms trade deals.

The United Nations (UN) has imposed sanctions on North Korea aimed at halting its arms trade, which has become a source of income for the poverty stricken communist state.

The UN also called on states to clamp down on suspected arms shipments from North Korea.

A US envoy coordinating the enforcement of UN sanctions on the North held talks in Malaysia with officials. South Korean dailies said the discussions focused on possibly shutting down bank accounts used by the North for suspected illicit deals.

“The Obama administration has uncovered suspicious North Korean bank accounts in Malaysia,” the Joongang Ilbo newspaper quoted a diplomatic source in Washington as saying.
