More than a month after allegations of irregularities surfaced over the Shah Alam Hospital project, the Public Works Department (PWD) has yet to respond to the questions raised.
Last month, Malaysiakini reported source-based claims that the contract was awarded under debatable circumstances and at an inflated price of about RM500 million to Sunshine Fleet Sdn Bhd, a company owned by a member of the Selangor royalty.
The company has allegedly been skimming off project funds for 'advances' and 'expenses', and also stands accused of harassing companies it had engaged as sub-contractors. It has refused comment, saying that queries should be directed to PWD which 'owns' the project.
Since then, PWD secretary-general Judin Abdul Karim - who signed the letter awarding the contract - has not been available for comment, despite repeated phone calls to his office.
The matter was referred instead to Judin's special officer Zulakmal Sufian, who requested that the questions be emailed to his boss, with a copy to him.
This was duly done on Dec 10 and Zulakmal confirmed receipt by phone. He later indicated that the questions had been addressed by Judin and that the response would be sent when public relations officer Saipol Anwar Mohd Raji has reworked it.
Among the questions were whether the contract was awarded in an open tender or if it was directly negotiated and why the cost has escalated from the original allocation of RM300 million.

high and lower income group people into consideration,according to
Finance Trade Minister Tan Sri Anuar Ali.
"From May 1, the fuel will be pegged at RM 3.90 per litre for
RON97,while RON95 will increase to RM 3.70 per litre.
However, the prices of national-made vehicles will be lowered
by
at least 40 percent. For example, a
full-spec family sedan Proton Persona 1.6 litre engine will cost
around
RM 23,000.00 excluding road tax and
insurance. Import tax and excise duty will be revised to only 30
percent,
from the current 200 percent.
Imported vehicles such as the new Toyota Camry 2.4 litre engine will
cost
around RM 65,000.00." he said.
The mechanics has been said to be undertaken by a team of experts from
Australia and Canada who were
earlier briefed on the issue of subsidy in this country, whereas after
consideration by the transport minister,
they have signed the constitution that the system will be made on May
1,
the day it goes into effect.
under the new system, there will be a major effect on the existing
consumers who have already purchased a
vehicle and to those who are inthe midst of repaying the loan of their
vehicle to their financial institutions.
Ahmad Tajuddin said the government might also re-introduce a cash
return
annually to Malaysians who own a
1,500 cc and below vehicle. The amount have yet to be decided but he
assured that the amount will compensate
the price of fuel by at least half to eligible Malaysians based on
bumi quota.

Najib’s RM20milion image builders are Israelis
APCO Worldwide, the company hired by the prime minister to redeem his flagging image, has allegedly offered similar services to dictators and corrupt leaders around the globe, according to the Times of India.
The most influential media in India reported recently that apart from Najib, the Washington-based PR company had also serviced former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and Kazakhstan’s life-long president Nursultan Abishuly Nazarbayev.
APCO’s clients also included millionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who was once the youth leader for the Russian Communist Party with links to the mafia.
Pakatan Rakyat weekly Suara Keadilan quoted he Times of India as stating that APCO Worldwide had the capability of re-engineering the image of public figures and leaders who were not popular with the people.
The Times had launched an investigation into APCO Worldwide after it was discovered that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was a client of the company. (Gujarat is a state in India).
Narendra had been fingered as the cause of religious riots in February 2002, where 1,000 people were killed, majority of whom were muslims.
To re-build Narendra’s image the Gujarat Government had hired APCO Worldwide paying them US$25,000 a month fee for their services.
“Although APCO’s services is three time higher than other PR firms, it was chosen because it had many former Republicans and Democrats acting as consultants,” The Times said.
