Another Indian ex-telecom minister in graft scandal
Ravi Velloor The Straits Times Publication Date : 11-10-2011
Former telecommunications minister Dayanidhi Maran.
India's swirling telecom scandal reached Malaysia, with the federal anti-graft agency here initiating a probe against Malaysian tycoon T. Ananda Krishnan and his aide, for possible collusion with former telecommunications minister Dayanidhi Maran to wrest control of cellphone company Aircel.
"The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against then Minister of Communications Mr Maran, as well as Mr Ananda Krishnan and Mr Ralph Marshall of Maxis," CBI spokesman R.K. Gaur told The Straits Times yesterday, elaborating on a press statement on the CBI website that mentioned no names.
"Now that the first information report has been lodged, the investigation will take on momentum. I expect we will approach Malaysian authorities for help on investigating the Kuala Lumpur end of the case," the spokesman added.
For a start, Malaysian regulators are being approached for authenticated copies of statements made to them by Maxis, Mr Ananda's company, people familiar with the investigation said. Formal requests for assistance are also being dispatched to Malaysia and Mauritius seeking information on Maxis' ownership structure and its sister companies.
While a first information report (FIR) does not necessarily impute guilt, the probe is without question an embarrassment for the well-connected Mr Ananda and his close aide Mr Marshall, a director of listed Maxis as well as its sister firm Maxis Communications, the company that controversially took a 74 per cent stake in Aircel.
Pabila mendengar suara melalui lagu-lagu klasiknya maka sayu kesannya apatah lagi arwah baru saja mengadap Illahinya.
