“We are allowing proprietary heirs to talk (with Malaysia). Since it is part of our claim, it will be there as our land,” Manila papers quote him as saying.
PETALING JAYA: Incoming President Rodrigo Duterte has vowed to pursue the Philippines’ claim to Sabah, the Philippine Star reported.
Pressed if he would recognise the claim of the sultanate of Sulu, Duterte replied: “Yes. What has been the policy will always be the policy of the government, especially those for the interests of the country.
“We have to stake our claim.”
The Sulu sultanate used to rule over parts of southern Philippines and Sabah. In 1963, the British government transferred Sabah to the Federation of Malaysia, the report said.
